A Prayer For People Who Have No Idea What To Do With Their Life

A Prayer For People Who Have No Idea What To Do With Their Life

Almost everyone goes through a season in which they are desperately trying to figure out what God’s plan is for their life. Whether it’s discerning marriage, a religious vocation, or taking a new job, it can be difficult to know where God is leading you.

Fr. Thomas Merton wrote this simple, yet beautiful prayer that is perfect to say when you are unsure of God’s will and plan.

O Lord God,I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end.

Nor do I really know myself, and that fact that I think I am following Your will, does not mean that I am actually doing so.

But I believe that the desire to please You, does in fact please You. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.

I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire to please You. And I know that if I do this, You will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it.

Therefore I will trust You always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear,

for You are ever with me, and You will never leave me to make my journey alone.

Taking time to listen to God is an essential part of the discernment process in any decision. The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement are offering a Discernment Weekend Retreat at Graymoor to help young adults (18-39) discover how to best serve God. In addition to insightful talks, prayer, and the opportunity for spiritual direction, there will be plenty of time for reflection in the peaceful, scenic atmosphere of Graymoor in Garrison, NY, which is right on the Appalachian Trail.
