No matter how much we contemplate, discuss, and pray about a decision, it can still be difficult to know what God is calling us to do. In the same way that we ask friends and family to pray for us, we can ask the saints to intercede on our behalf. There are a few saints who have experience in helping people make big decisions.
St. Ignatius of Loyola
The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius were written to help people discern God’s will.
St. Alphonsus Liguori
Though he had a very successful law career, St. Alphonsus eventually discerned a call to the priesthood. He had a very practical, simple way of preaching that helped others to hear God’s call.
St. Joseph
The foster father of Jesus demonstrates that being obedient to what you know God is asking of you is the key to understanding and fulfilling God’s ultimate plan.
Catholic young adults (18-40) looking for more practical spiritual guidance and direction, should attend a Discernment Weekend at Graymoor in Garrison, NY, hosted by the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. This weekend will include inspiring talks, time to listen for God’s voice in your life, and guidance from Fr. James Loughran, SA, and others. Reflecting in the peaceful, scenic atmosphere of Graymoor, which is right on the Appalachian Trail, will help you to discover how you can best serve God’s kingdom.
