A charism is a free gift of grace; a gift from the Holy Spirit that makes an individual especially inclined or prepared to do a certain work for God. A group of individuals with similar charisms can complete mountains of service for God that might never be possible for the individual.
The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement live out the Gospel in specific ways to demonstrate the love and gifts of God. We often say that our charism is “At-One-Ment,’ that is, the gift of unification through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Our Lord wanted us to be of one mind and heart. In a world full of divisions, At-One-Ment Friars seek to unify not only Catholics, but all people, through the gift of love that Jesus bestows.
A charism can often be demonstrated in a variety of ways. Some friars are great with words and instruct others on the unifying power of God (gifts of instruction are charisms in and of themselves.) Other friars prefer quiet service (think of Jesus washing the feet of Peter.)
