There are many things that the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement have in common. Together they are united in the vision to “bring at-one-ment to a fragmented world through gospel love, mercy and healing.” As a religious community, each Friar seeks to encourage all people to find the unity God has given them within themselves, with God and with one another. They daily come together in prayer, encouraging and supporting each other.

Yet, the Holy Spirit enables each Friar to live out his calling in a special way, using his unique gifts, talents, and interests to minister to the world.

Check out the incredible ways these 3 Friars have found to be of service to God and the community.

3 Incredible Friars Who Creatively Used Their Skills To Serve

Fr. Martin Carter, SA

Fr. Carter was instrumental in founding Kujenga (“to build” in Swahili), a leadership-training program for African American Catholic youth that emphasized forming a positive identity and discovering their gifts. His work has made a profound impact in the Catholic communities in which he has served over the years.

Brother John O’Hara, SA

Br. O’Hara’s love of photography began at the age of 12. Formerly an instructor for the Nikon School, he now specializes in decorative photography and lectures on the Expression of One’s Spirituality through Photographic Process. Brother O’Hara leads others to discover the truth, beauty, and goodness of God through his artistic ability.

Fr. Emil Tomaskovic, SA

Father Tomaskovic has fulfilled many roles in his time as a Friar. Having received accreditation in alcoholism counseling, he was formerly President of the New York Federation of Alcoholism Counselors and Vice President of the New York State Council on Alcoholism. He has also served as the Minister General of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, guiding the Friars in their pastoral, social, and ecumenical ministries throughout the world. Fr. Tomaskovic’s gift of counseling has helped many find freedom from addiction and discern God’s will.

These three Friars have answered a specific call from God to serve Him using their individual talents and abilities. Together they make up the Body of Christ, acting as His hands and feet to the world.
