Remembering the Friars of the Atonement in Your Will

Over the years a great many of our friends have made provisions for the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in their will.  By naming the Friars as a beneficiary in a will, you can make a significant gift and may obtain benefits of estate tax savings.  There are four simple ways to make a bequest.

General Bequest: A General Bequest is a gift of a dollar amount or an amount equal to a percentage or fractional share of the estate.

Specific Bequest: A Specific Bequest is a gift of a designated item or property.   Using this approach, you may bequeath items such as a parcel of real estate, a work of art, or financial securities to the Friars.

Residuary Bequest: A Residuary Bequest is a gift of the remainder of one's estate after provisions have been made for debts, general and specific bequests, and administrative expenses, including death taxes.  An individual may name one or a number of residuary beneficiaries, including the Friars of the Atonement among the recipients of this part of the estate.

Testamentary Trust: A Testamentary Trust, most commonly set up in the form of a Charitable Remainder Trust, is a trust fund that is established by will.  This estate planning device makes annual payments to specifically named beneficiaries for life or for a specific term.  When payments have been satisfied, the assets of the trust pass to the Friars.

How to make a bequest: When preparing or revising a will, you may name the Friars as a beneficiary by using the following sample language:

I give and bequeath to the Friars of the Atonement, Inc., the sum of $_______ to be used to advance its ministries.
or
I give and bequeath x% of my estate at the time of my death to the Friars of the Atonement,Inc., to be used to advance its ministries.

When making a bequest, you should consult your attorney, financial advisor or accountant.
