MEETING THE NEEDS OF PEOPLE WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST
A Friar’s life-in-mission is faithful to the founder’s vision of unity and atonement. The Friars bring the gospel to others as itinerant Franciscans. Those Friars who have been called to serve in pastoral ministries throughout the world meet the needs of people when they need it most. Today, Franciscan Friars of the Atonement serve the spiritual needs of thousands of people on three continents.
PARISHES & ASSOCIATED MINISTRIES
The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement currently serve at these parishes, chapels and centers:
- St. Joan of Arc: Toronto, Ontario
- Chapel of Our Savior: Brockton, MA
- St. Joseph’s Parish and School, Catholic Atonement Center, Soup Kitchen: Tsurumi Japan
Sant’ Onofrio, Rome, Italy (Since 1945, the friars have been guardians and administrators for Sant’Onofrio al Gianicolo, the official church of the papal order of The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem)
ATONEMENT CENTER
Since 1960, when Richard Cardinal Cushing, the Archbishop of Boston, invited the Society of the Atonement to send some Friars to establish the presence of that religious community, the Chapel of Our Savior in Brockton has provided a spiritual oasis from the busy commercial world for thousands of faithful. Distinct from a parish, 7 Friars serve over 700 people here through daily Mass and Confessions, as well as a well-known religious bookstore.
OTHER MINISTRIES
In addition, The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement provide social services to prisons and hospitals. Among the existing ministries are alcohol and/or chemical dependency ministries through prison chaplaincies as well as hospital and nursing home ministries at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Vancouver; St. Vincent’s Hospital in Harrison, NY; Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, VT; and a Social service walk-in center in British Columbia, Canada.
